Ask a neighbor what their air duct cleaning or chimney service cost, and you might get an answer that has nothing to do with your house. That is not because anyone is being cagey. It is because the work depends on what is behind your walls and on top of your roof, and no two homes in New Haven are built quite the same.
At YA HOME SERVICE, most of our customer questions come down to two things: how long will this take, and what will it cost. We will not throw out numbers here, because an honest answer depends on your home. What we can do is walk you through the factors that actually move the time and cost up or down, so you know what to expect and how to plan before anyone shows up at your door.
The size and layout of your system
The biggest single factor is simply how much there is to clean. A small apartment with a handful of vents is a different job from a three-floor colonial in Hamden with supply and return vents in every room.
Size is not just square footage, though. Layout matters just as much.
- Number of vents. Every supply and return register is a point the crew has to reach, open, clean, and close up again.
- Number of systems. Some homes have more than one heating or cooling system, often one per floor. Each has its own main trunk and its own run of ductwork.
- Length of the runs. Long, winding duct runs take more time to clean thoroughly than short, straight ones.
- Access. Ducts in an open basement are easier to reach than ones tucked into a tight attic or a finished ceiling.
A thorough job covers the whole system, not just the vents you can see. One customer described exactly that kind of visit:
"They cleaned all the supply and return vents, the main system, and left everything spotless. The air feels much fresher, and I can already notice an improvement in airflow." - eagle locksmith LLC
That last part, the main system, is where much of the real work happens, and it is a big reason a full cleaning takes longer than a quick vent wipe.
How much buildup there is
Two homes of the same size can still take very different amounts of time, because what is inside the ducts varies so much.
What tends to add buildup
- Recent renovation work, which sends drywall dust and debris into the system
- Pets that shed
- A long stretch since the last cleaning, or no cleaning at all
- A move into an older home where you do not know the history
Light dust clears quickly. Heavy, packed debris takes more passes and more care, especially at bends and joints. If you have just finished a kitchen remodel in North Haven or sanded floors in West Haven, it helps to mention that when you call. It gives us a better picture before we arrive.
Chimneys have their own set of factors
Chimney work is a different animal from duct cleaning, and the time it takes depends on a few things you can often spot from the ground or from inside the house.
Cleaning versus repair
A routine cleaning is one thing. If the cap is missing, rusted, or damaged, the job grows to include recapping. That means more materials and more time up top. One of our customers in the area had both done in the same visit:
"Company had other customers in the area decided to stop by ask if we would like chimney recap and clean made appointment came on time, did excellent job showed pic's of before yikes and after niiiice." - Elwood Vereen
Before and after photos are a habit worth keeping. A chimney is hard to see for yourself, and pictures let you understand what was done and why.
The type of fireplace
A wood burning fireplace, a gas fireplace, and an insert each bring different considerations. Gas units in particular call for someone who understands how the unit and the flue work together. As Jeff Davis put it after his visit, the technician had a "great understanding of gas fireplaces and flu structures. Explained things well to me."
Height, pitch, and roof access
- A tall chimney on a steep roof takes more setup and more care than a short one on a gentle slope.
- Ice, rain, or high wind can make roof work unsafe, which can push a visit to a better day.
- Older masonry, common in many New Haven neighborhoods, may need a closer look before work begins.
Access inside your home
This one surprises people. A good share of the time on any job goes to simply getting to the work.
If vents are blocked by heavy furniture, if the furnace sits behind boxes in a crowded basement, or if the only way to the attic is through a closet packed to the ceiling, the crew has to work around it. That takes time that has nothing to do with cleaning.
Here is a short list of things you can do beforehand that genuinely help:
- Clear a path to the furnace or air handler.
- Move furniture or rugs away from vents if you can do it easily.
- Make sure the attic hatch or basement door is reachable.
- Clear the area in front of the fireplace.
- Put pets in a separate room for the visit.
None of this is required, and we will work with whatever we find. But a clear path means more of the visit goes to the work you actually want done.
The trade-offs worth thinking about
When people plan home service work, they usually weigh a few choices. There is no single right answer, but it helps to see them laid out.
Doing everything at once, or spreading it out
Bundling duct cleaning and chimney work into one visit can save you scheduling hassle, and it means one day of disruption instead of two. On the other hand, a bigger visit is a longer day at home. Some people prefer to split it. Either way is fine; just tell us what works for your household.
Whole system, or just the problem area
Cleaning only the vents in one room may seem like a way to keep things simple, but dust and debris move through the whole system. Cleaning one part and leaving the rest often means the clean part does not stay clean for long. A whole system cleaning takes longer, and it is usually the more sensible choice when you are going to the trouble at all.
Waiting, or getting ahead of it
It is tempting to put off this kind of work until something seems wrong. The trouble is that by the time you notice a smell, dust coming from vents, or a fireplace that will not draw well, the job may have grown. Planning ahead usually means a simpler visit.
Why the explanation matters as much as the work
You cannot easily see inside a duct or up a flue, so you are trusting whoever does the work to tell you what they found. That is a big part of why we explain the process before we start and show you what we see.
Our customers notice this. Several reviews mention it directly, and it is something we take seriously:
"The team arrived on time, were very professional, and explained everything clearly before starting the job. They worked efficiently and left the house clean and tidy. You can really feel the difference in air quality after the service." - אהרון עשור
A clear explanation also helps you understand the time and cost. If a job takes longer than you expected, you should know why. If something needs attention, you should see it for yourself and decide what to do about it.
How to plan your visit
A little planning makes the whole thing easier for everyone. Here is how we suggest going about it.
Before you call
- Count roughly how many vents you have, and note how many heating or cooling systems the house has.
- Think about when the ducts or chimney were last cleaned, if you know.
- Note any recent renovations, pets, or problems like dusty vents, odors, or a smoky fireplace.
- If you have a gas fireplace or insert, mention it.
Picking a day
Our hours run most of the week, with a shorter Friday morning and Saturday closed. You can see the full schedule on our contact page. Choose a day when you can be home or have someone there to let the crew in. For chimney work, keep in mind that weather can affect roof safety, so a little flexibility helps.
On the day
Clear the paths mentioned above, keep pets settled, and feel free to ask questions. A good crew will walk you through what they are doing and leave the house the way they found it, or better.
